In all, we interviewed 23 women at ﬁve large, suburban brothels, and 14 women at smaller or mid-sized brothels in more isolated rural areas. We interviewed one woman over the phone who had experience working in several of the brothels. Most of the interviews took place in the brothels in northern Nevada. Less than an hour’s drive outside of Reno, we interviewed ten women at the Moonlite Bunny Ranch near Carson City, six women nearby at Miss Kitty’s, two at the Mustang Ranch, and two at the Old Bridge Ranch.
First, we conclude that we can no longer understand prostitution as any one thing. Context matters. The basic social relations and institutions characterizing Nevada’s legal brothels are surprisingly similar in form and function to non-sex leisure industries. Today’s new global economy has created a context that aﬀects the forms prostitution takes. Legal brothels in Nevada should be understood primarily as leisure businesses in a contemporary consumer society. Second, brothel prostitution is highly aﬀected by the dynamics of gender, class and racial inequalities.
These terms are also used when referring to other forms of sexual labor in today’s marketplace, including lap dancing, adult ﬁlm performances, phone sex, and other exchanges involving paid sexual performances or activities. We realize that there is an important debate about whether sex in this sense is or is not wholly and simply labor. Our use of these alternate terms does not exclude the potentially profound inequalities that surround the social relations of selling sex. Recognizing the symbolic importance of the term “prostitution,” we are very judicious in our use of the term in this book.
